" Christians Have Got It Backwards "

I was just reading an article in the Wall Street Journal about how conservative Christians are split between whom they should support, because while they want someone to match up with their beliefs and values, they also want someone who can be a strong contender against the top Democratic candidate.  So, for example, while a Christian might not want to support Giuliani because of his pro-abortion stance, he may feel Giuliani's the only "strong" one who has a shot of winning.

While this is a natural concern, and was the first thing that came to my mind earlier on, I was suddenly struck with the simple truth found all throughout the Old Testament, time and time again.  Despite being a Christian and student of the Bible for over 20 years, it took me intensely studying about the kings of Israel and Judah in my Community Bible Study this year for me to see clearly this simple truth:  It doesn't matter the skill of the king - or president - what matters most to God is one's heart, one's character, and whether or not that person was/is being wholeheartedly devoted to Him.  What happened when numerous, strong enemies came against a godly king, time and time again?  They were routed, often miraculously, by God's hand swooping in to conquer their enemies.  God wants to protect and bring peace to people who call upon His name!  And He will do whatever it takes to preserve that nation that follows hard after Him.

Moreover, the Scriptures themselves state that God will rise up enemies against nations who refuse to follow Him... For example, King Solomon in 1 Kings 11:14, 23 where God Himself raised up two adversaries against Solomon because He did not keep the Lord's statutes and commands.  On the other hand, God mightily protects and blesses those who follow Him.  Just look at 2 Chronicles 16:9:  "For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him."  Is that not amazing!?  We need to get this point, Christians!!!

So I challenge you - forget all the "strong" candidates and think only about a candidate's heart and devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ.  If we pray for the most godly candidate possible to fill the White House, and seeking God to, with His mighty arm, place that godly man in power, can it not be done, regardless of our logical assumptions??  And will we not be greatly blessed for not compromising our faith and values in doing so??
